What are expected AI impacts on skilled professions?
There have now been multiple studies that show the jobs currently most exposed to AI are the most educated and highly paid, and the ones involving the most creativity.
This recent paper examines the potential impact of AI on occupations and industries.
Building on their AI Industry Exposure (AIIE) measure published in 2021, the authors identify which occupations might be the most affected by AI technologies including Large Language Models (LLMs).
The analysis encompasses over 800 occupations and 52 human abilities.
While exposure to AI does not necessarily mean replacement, it does indicate that these jobs and businesses will be impacted and are likely to transform to varying degrees as a result.
Contributing to a growing body of evidence, this investigation found that highly skilled and well-paid professions such as academics, teachers, psychologists, and lawyers are among the most susceptible to AI disruption.
This contradicts the past common belief that AI and automation would primarily target dangerous and repetitive tasks.
