The World Economic Forum's paradigm shifting education framework.

Education 4.0 represents a vision for education that aligns with the emerging Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is characterized by the integration of digital technologies, the internet of things, cloud computing, and other innovations into all aspects of human life.

It represents a departure from previous educational models to a new paradigm that prepares students for our constantly changing technology driven world.

Education 4.0 emphasises that learning should be an inclusive, lifelong journey. It positions the learner as the central figure responsible for skill-building whilst teachers and mentors act as facilitators, rather than dictators of knowledge.

The critical skills framing this model are problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability.

Education 4.0 Problem solving collaboration and adaptability

Problem-solving

In our world filled with complexity and ambiguity, problem solving is integral to everyone’s daily lives. Problem solving abilities benefit from 'normalising trouble,' wherein problems are embraced as learning opportunities. Instead of providing solutions, teachers support students in developing solutions themselves, honing their critical thinking, creativity, data analysis, and perseverance.

Collaboration

Collaboration goes beyond mere group activities to teach students to effectively communicate and influence, while being open to influences themselves. By incorporating elements such as interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, and task management into daily educational activities. With classroom settings designed for diverse groups and rotating roles, students can practice collaboration in realistic scenarios.

Adaptability

Adaptability spans from comfort with uncertainty and change to making effective decisions under pressure. It involves cognitive, behavioural, and emotional adjustments. Developing skills like resilience, buoyancy, and self-regulation helps students to cope with change. By following a cycle of self-evaluation, goal setting, skill-building, and re-evaluation, students learn to be agile and flexible.
